UV Light or Natural Water Treatment

an ultraklear 2500 UV clarifier

I have been building ponds, water features, maintain fish ponds for 24 years. I get asked a lot about uv lights for ponds, instead of using algicide. A lot of homeowners are worried/scared of using algicide in there ponds, worried might use to much and kill their fish. When I am done with a new pond or cleaning out a pond. I go over everything with you on how much to use in your pond, when the best time of the day to treat your pond. I will mark on the the container and on a measuring cup of how much to use.

One of the main reasons people put uv lights on their pond is to help with green water. The reason ponds turn green is the more sun that hits your pond the warmer the water gets, causing green water. If you overfeed your fish, don’t have enough plants in the pond the water will turn green. With our summers here, how hot it gets it is a challenge during the summer months. The more shade, the cooler you can keep the water less of a chance you will have the green water. If you are able to put your pond/ still be able to enjoy it from your patio/house like under a pergola with vines growing on it or under shaded area or area with large tree canopy. Having water lilies and floating plants do wonders for a pond, it helps keep the water cooler. Plus having marginal plants like irises, creeping jenny, black taro plants, many other water plants help control green water. Having the right filtration, proper flow of water, circulation is very important also. I see a lot of ponds that have 100% of the water going through the uv light. When you have 100% of the water going through the uv light you are killing all bacteria in your pond. You want bacteria in your pond, it helps with quality/clarity of the water. If you have a pond/love being outside enjoying your pond watching the fish, while you are there you can add water treatment to your pond, takes less than 5 min to do. You want to add beneficial bacteria on a weekly basis. If you choose you can do it everyday, you will not hurt your pond or your fish, you are putting a lot of healthy treatments into your pond and for your fish.

I do offer a service of maintenance, I will install a self dosing unit into your pond which will automatic treat your pond or a daily basis. Depending on the size of your pond I will come out at the recommend time, replace the bag in the unit, at the time I will do any maintenance on your pond that is need. The price will vary depending on what you all want done at the time of service. If you go with this service I will still recommend putting in Beneficial bacteria into your pond. If you are interested in know more on your existing pond or looking to get a new water feature installed call 813-440-3442 to schedule a consultation.
